Protecting your creativity! why Intellectual Property is important with John Coldham of Gowling WLG
Many businesses dedicate huge amounts of time, energy and cost to the development of their great idea and bringing that idea to reality. But how do you stop others from taking advantage of that investment? Some consider imitation to be a form of flattery, but when you’ve given every waking hour to building your idea and the business that will sell it, most people do not find the experience of others selling copies an enjoyable one.
John Coldham, an expert brands, designs and patents lawyer, will speak about the importance of thinking about intellectual property protection early. This need not cost much, if anything at all, but the important thing is that you start thinking about it. John works with clients large and small to ensure that they have the right level of protection, how their ideas could be making them more money, and ensuring that others do not piggy back on their investment. John hosts an annual event as part of the London Design Festival, is a Specialist on the Design Council’s Spark programme, and is involved in a number of design law policy committees considering the impact of Brexit and other issues, so is well placed to provide the big picture on IP protection as well as the detail.
In this Working Lunch, John will set out the basics, and give you some ideas on how to make the most of the rights you already have, as well as considering what the best approach to IP protection is for you.
Working Lunch’ is a series of talks, workshops and one to one sessions organised as part of the Makerversity Community Programme, connecting startup businesses with industry professionals and business support.
This event is open to Makerversity and Somerset House tenants only.
