Kickstarter advice: Sidekick founder, Oscar Lhermitte

By Krisi

10 do’s and don’ts for launching a successful Kickstarter from Makerversity member and Sidekick founder, Oscar Lhermitte.
Sidekick Creatives are group of designers, filmmakers and media professionals brought together by Oscar. With their combination of skill-sets they are able to help projects execute successful campaigns and in turn realise their crowdfunding goals.

DO’S
#1 HAVE A PROJECT
Clearly defined in one sentence – An idea is not a project

#2 WITH A DEFINED OBJECTIVE
This is not a test

#3 AND A PLAN OF EXECUTION
With key dates in control

#4 CREATE EXCITING REWARDS
That reach a large and diverse community

#5 MAKE A VIDEO
The shorter the better

#6 SHOW THE PAGE TO YOUR FRIENDS
Get feedback

#7 CHECK COPYRIGHTS – INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
Are you in your rights to develop this project?

#8 USE SOCIAL NETWORKS
If people do not talk about the project, it won’t be visible

#9 SPREAD THE WORD ONLINE AND OFFLINE
Reach out for people at meetings, tradeshows, events, …

#10 HAVE FUN DOING IT!

Oscar's successful crowd funded project. Gaining more the 10 x the needed backing.

DON’TS
#1 BEG FOR MONEY
Engage with people

#2 KEEP IT SECRET UNTIL YOU LAUNCH
Share it with people before the launch

#3 SIT AND WAIT
It’s hard work but worth putting in the time

#4 HURRY THE LAUNCH
If you are not ready, don’t launch it

#5 EXPECT TO GET RICH QUICK
Most campaigns raise less than £500

#6 MAKE IT COMPLEX
Be clear and coherent

#7 ASK MORE THAN YOU NEED
Asking for more will not necessary give you more

#8 PROMISE THINGS YOU CAN’T
This is not a test, you have things to fulfil

#9 TAKE A BREAK ONCE YOU GOT THE FUNDS
It is only the beginning

#10 GIVE UP
A failed campaign does not mean your project is not worth doing
